Overview
Whitby, North Yorkshire, 1894 Two apprentice photographers, David Taylor and John Evans, find themselves unemployed when their employer dies. They fall into the clutches of Hood, a notorious charlatan eager to exploit them as “spirit photographers” by using the infamous Tate Camera now owned by David. The camera is rumoured to have the ability not only to photograph spirits, but it can also predict how and when the person photographed will die. Desperate for work, David and John have no other choice but to accept Hood’s offer. Lucy Shaw, an ambitious reporter for The Whitby Herald, believes both Hood and spirit photography is a fraud. Her search for the truth attracts the attention of David, and possibly that of a murderer. David is charming, handsome...a real lady-killer. A newcomer to Whitby, he is reluctant to talk about his past or his direct link to the murder victims—especially since ghostly shadows appear on the portraits of young women he photographed shortly before their deaths. Are the rumours about the Tate Camera true? Can it predict the future? Can it expose a killer? Meanwhile…The Whitby Ripper waits for his next victim.
