You can feel the tension in the Capital. The whole city is at breaking point. During the day, everyone goes about their business in silence. Workers keep their heads down, the bosses are watchful but they don’t risk the lash. When it goes dark, it’s another story. The rich don’t sleep sound in their beds anymore, they fear the Revolution’s assassins will pay them a visit in the middle of the night. They’ve even begun to fear any large gangs of normal folk, once the sun’s gone down. Guards are stationed atop every rooftop, if they see you looking dangerous, or suspicious, or just poor, they’ll put an arrow in you. But they don’t leave their battlements, not these nights, they stay where it’s safe. Above, airships packed with police circle in endless patrols. There’s rumours of Hell magicians aboard, scanning the sky using the evil eye. Some say the Engineering Union has been hired to hunt down those the King calls terrorists. There’s even Hounds about, hanging from high towers on their terrible beasts. They’re all looking for the same thing. I saw them. Last night, three metal dragons flew right over my head. They were going somewhere important, and it wasn’t to do any talking. They avoid the ships, they dodge the guards, they creep over the rooftops and in through windows, and they slit rich people’s throats. The assassins of the Revolution. The power of the Devil flows in their blood, nothing can stop them, not even the King.
