Overview
Elizabeth Stuart Phelps Ward (1844-1911) was an American author and reformer. She was one of the first American feminist authors and intellectuals to publish several books that challenged traditional Calvinist upbringing. Long considered a writer of didactic moral novels in the tradition of Victorian women's fiction, Phelps has more recently been discovered to have been an early proponent of feminism in her writings and in her life. She also wrote some supernatural novels and tales. This collection gather for the first time her three novels of Heaven (“The Gates Ajar”, “Beyond the Gates”, and “The Gates Between”) together with her collection “Men, Women and Ghosts” (1869), and her uncollected supernatural work. Edited and with an Introduction by Peter Grisham.
