'Outside on Warmoesstraat, the night was closing in, bringing its usual rucksacked arrivals seeking shelter and a spliff, its parties of rowdy beer-swilling Brits, the crack dealers in metallic puffa jackets and bling, the leery-eyed men heading for the red light booths. Weaving among these were flashing figures attired in the skins of wild animals; a leopard-man here, a red-mouthed woman in wolf's clothing there; but these moved towards the river so fast that scrutiny was impossible. One was merely left doubting the veracity one's peripheral vision. 'Neon signs announced bar and sex shop, coffeeshop and hotel. The bells of Sint Nicolaaskerk and Oude Kerk chimed a lengthy carillon, a cheery summons to all good spirits. On the dark water by the cathedral, the new ship swayed and sent out its own music in which ancient cadences and technical finesse were alluringly combined. The strange-angled melodies and sudden glissandos painted pictures in the mind, images that did not belong to ordinary perception, many of them being mythic in nature, and to the majority of listeners, incomprehensible.' A mysterious vessel sails into Amsterdam and sets up as the world's ultimate nightclub. It swiftly proves preternaturally tempting, even to sensible Jude, who moves to the city to be with her musician boyfriend, Rafferty. Soon they are joined by her effete, intellectual son Lenox, whose interest in the occult, existentialism and sexual exploration lead him – and the victims of his experiments – into surreal and soul-changing adventures. There is a SPIRITUS ship that floats in the psyches of each of us. When the climate is attuned to just the right pitch of desire, and personal ambition supersedes spiritual conscience, it will come out of nowhere, to confront us in real form, to test our very souls, to lure us towards it with its impossibly beautiful lights and music, with its pleasures most insuperable, on a dark river at night.
