A cosmic grimdark horror that doesn't care about your feelings.Enter the dark city of Skrimgool. A war-weary Lord fights injustice as his ultra-violent alter-ego, Haxfuri. Alas, he and his closest companions fail to save the sheriff's daughter from a crazed cult's vicious ritual - a cult that should have been dead.In the months after, the effects of the ritual linger and a dreadful, tarry plague consumes the land and threatens every creature within it with malignant malformation.Witch-hunting and heretic-burning run rife as the religious patriarchy turns increasingly fanatical to enforce order and female subservience. Haxfuri descends into potion-doped insanity, desperate to prevent the horrors of the sheriff's bloodthirst. The wilder Haxfuri fights, though, the worse he fears the rising darkness inside him and the monstrous voice through which it speaks.A holy, unsparing holocaust is coming to cleanse Skrimgool city and if Haxfuri can't bring himself to stop it, he'll find that the nightmare is only beginning. . .Goodreads ReviewsThis is not a usual or typical fantasy novel. I think to claim that it’s dark would be a massive understatement. This is not for the faint of heart, as they say. The author does not pull his punches when it comes to dialogue, violence or disturbing your mind. I think it's fair to say that it won’t be for everyone by a long shot but if you enjoy stories where the consequences matter and you can’t guess the outcomes of situations then you are in for a treat. - PageTurnerThe entire world N J M Hemfrey has constructed is, to me anyway, completely original. This isn’t a fantasy that borrows elves, dwarves, orcs or other creatures. Everything is completely unique, from the gods to the practices to the monsters. There is a lot to learn here but well worth it if you dive in. In terms of magic, there is transdimensional powers but again I won’t say anymore. It’s a gritty, medieval world where life and society is constantly under the pressures of religious fanaticism and misogyny. - BreezyreaderIf The Black Company and The Steel Remains are some of your favorite grimdark escapades, you'll be adding Haxfuri to your list. If you have this durable mindset then should be able to enjoy the constant assaults to your sense of self and morality, and forgive how much the author does not care about your feelings. - Vera NathaniMedieval Grimdark kingdoms, cursed god-killin swords, frenzied plagued hordes, so much much blood, graphic sex, political intrigue, damning and unpredictable betrayal, completely twisted takes of Lovecraftian angels and demons, and one hellish ending that shrieks for a sequel. - Greg MBloody good fun in parts and completely hollowing in others. It's like the author took Batman, Berserk, Dark Souls, and elements of the Roman Empire, shoved them in the creative blender and poured a mind-spasming grimdark smoothie you can't help but drink down - if you're fans of this genre that it. It's way too hardcore for the average fantasy goer. - Gary JuddHaxfuri excels regarding the depth in character studies and psychological developments compared to other books I've read. Haxfuri, Hakon's state, in particular make him a very unreliable narrator. The other really interesting aspect is that other character perspectives, the traumas they're suffering, and their agendas really do change how the world looks depending on which chapter is from which point of view. - Burt ReviewasaurusThis grimdark has great and unique worldbuilding with its Norse/Medieval/The Witcher like setting, excellently brutal fight scenes that made me wince so badly and yet I couldn't look away, and really really compelling dialogue, this is just philosophical slop splattered onto you to see if you suffocate or not. - Eliza Cruickshanks
