We are only as sick as our secrets Dr. Ron Hudson, a respected hypnotherapist working in criminal rehabilitation, takes a sidetrack and begins an experiment in the paranormal. The result, the manifestation of a supernatural creature who calls himself, Egosson. They are connected in such a way that only Ron can see and hear him. His purpose: “I exist, but to serve.” Ron is hesitant to trust the strange entity, who demonstrates poltergeist abilities but is very loathe to reveal his origins. In time, the socially awkward therapist is won over and follows Egosson down a sordid path which begins with a barroom pick up, and continues with an erotic affair with Dela Martinez-Howard, his secretary. As his social life blossoms, his personal life takes a rocky turn; he becomes a suspect in a homicide investigation and the target of Russian mobsters. The Russians believe Dela's late husband stole money from them and that she knows where it is hidden. She denies any such knowledge. They attempt to kidnap Dela, but with Egosson's help, Ron protects her. During this time, Ron is haunted by disturbing dreams that he cannot later recall. Later, he learns that Dela can now interact with Egosson. Ron awakes to hear them speaking, but he is oddly cut out of the telepathic link. He soon suspects Dela is aware of the money's hiding place, and that Egosson, who is clearly taken with the charming young woman, may have turned against him. During a visit to a criminal ward, one of his patients gives Ron a disturbing, nebulous warning: “We are only as sick as our secrets.” Bewildered by the strange message, Ron pursues his suspicions concerning both Dela and the strange spirit being. Eventually, he learns the truth behind Egosson's origins; a secret more terrifying than the creature's power and all the mobsters combined.
