Marilyn Anne McGee, a day over 25, slept on the couch in the living room of her house. Her smooth features relaxed and untroubled and her hair, either auburn or red, depending on the light of day, is a mess of curls rambling across her makeshift pillow. Very pretty - and very drunk, or was so when she stumbled in from a very late night with “the girls”. It was a fine end to a very hard week.First, someone stole her Dodge four by four. Two days later, she hit a delivery truck that blew a stop sign, crunching the truck and crumpling the leased Lumina beyond recognition. Being without wheels, she rides her bicycle down hill to The Luck when she is almost run over by a yellow sports car. The Luck of the Irish is a pub in a small town established a couple of generations ago by John McGee, a two fisted accountant and card player. He won the town of Mirth and all the went into it, including The Luck, in a card game. John McGee was Marilyn’s grandfather, her Grandda.Marilyn was sure she was losing it when she woke in the middle of the night, perhaps because of a dream where she heard the laughter of her dear departed Grandda. She found herself talking to him in the wee hours of the morning. More disturbing was he was talking to her as well. And she could see him.It seems her Grandda is caught between two worlds, the mortal and the heavenly, because of and obligation to look after his family. All Marilyn has to do is find the right guy that would save her two times so old John McGee can live a normal past life in heaven with his wife.Grandda also has a house on a lot in a small town in Ireland that needs to be reclaimed or it will be absorbed by the county. Someone has to go to the property manager assigned to the property and sign the papers to take ownership and perhaps meet the current tenant, an American musician.The thought of getting away from Mirth with a good excuse appeals to her. Handling family business is a solid reason for the trip so she doesn’t feel she is running away – again.What started as a short visit to Ireland for Marilyn turns into a series of life changing events that results in a new purpose for her, one not passed down to her through family, and fuels feelings she thought she would never again allow herself to have.
