Overview
This story collection takes a brash, satiric, and cryptic look at the insanity of future societies, based on our current behavior patterns. The novella and title story 'Souls For Sale', takes place in Charlottesville, Virginia, where slacker extraordinaire Josef Meddleson lives happily with very little. Jif peanut butter and loose older women pretty much covers it. He's rather smug about not being a cog in the new kind of hyper-active, barbaric world of commercialism. But Josef is about to get sucked in to the madness in ways he could never dream of. And speaking of dreams, why is he suddenly experiencing lurid waking nightmares? This and other grisly events have spun his life out of control. The most startling of these has Founding Father and home town hero Thomas Jefferson trying to pummel him to death. Has TJ somehow reanimated back to life, or has Josef lost his mind? Or both?'The Dust Of Memory' centers around a world that deals with over-population in a dark way. Howard Galt is one of a handful of Innerviewers in the world, elite individuals who can see the past by ingesting the DNA from others. Humans are living well over a hundred on average, and as Galt tries to decide how much longer he wants to exist, a local government calls him to examine a possible future act of terrorism by 'channeling' the suspect's previous political connections.A gut-wrenching chance meeting with two abandoned little girls convinces him it's time to call it a career. Whether he will stop 'seeing' past events is another matter. After he discovers exactly what the unaffiliated Spectral Investigation Contractors have up their sleeve to thin the population, Galt realizes the direction his life must take. The other seven stories are short, tightly woven absurdities with varying degrees of dark surrealism and comedy- tales feeding the dismal imagination hiding in all of us.
