A CENTURY-OLD LEGACY OF CRUELTY AND BETRAYALLaurel, a UCLA graduate student, came to the remote Adobe de Morales to reconstruct the newly unearthed letters of its first mistress, a beautiful girl who had not lived to be twenty. She was amazed to find that there were only two people living in the adobe, the owner, Gabriel Mora, a trial lawyer with a reputation for a violent temper, and Jose, his house man. A cleaning woman and her daughters came only once a week. Laurel had also heard rumors of an unwelcome ghostly resident but she had needed the job and had come anyway. The first evening she was there, working in the adobe’s library, she felt its presence. A second researcher, a priest from a nearby seminary, who was also involved in scouring the old records, tried to allay her fears. She continued to work during the following days, determined to shake off her apprehension. She renovated the first of the old letters. It highlighted the threat to Rena, the first mistress of Adobe Morales. Subsequent letters described events that led to fate of Rena, who had dared to face the evil she had witnessed. Unfortunately Laurel could not read the signature of the correspondent of that letter or any of the others, since the corner of the packet had been molded away. Puzzled by the hostility which surrounded her, and by her demanding employer, to whom she was unwillingly attracted, she tried to find out more of the adobe’s history. It led her to explore the outside of the adobe, as well as the documents, and to put her confidence in the county’s District attorney, Hugh Halkin, who visited the adobe in connection with a legal battle with Mora. Laurel’s researches eventually led to more than threats. It brought on confrontation.
