Overview

THE NOVEL THAT CREATED THE MODERN VAMPIRE Bram Stoker's DRACULA was not the first vampire story; it was not the first classic gothic novel; it was not even Stoker's first book. Where it failed to be the first, it eventually became the most successful and defining book about the modern vampire culture. It would be very difficult to find a vampire story today that does not find some of its roots in this novel. Stoker drew on many sources for the setting, the characters, and the personality of his Dracula story. He research the subject at length, and it is said was fascinated by Emily Gerard's essay, “Transylvania Superstitions.” He studied the historical figure Vlad Dracul, who was known as Dracula in the old country (and who, despite his violent ways, is still hailed by many of the region as a hero). Even the gestures and noble carriage of Dracula himself was said to come from the actor Sir Henry Irving, whom Stoker knew well form his job as the manager of the Lyceum Theater in England. Dracula, although regularly acclaimed as a masterpiece on par with the works of Poe, Shelly, and others in the horror genre, was not profitable for Stoker, who barley eked out a living in later life. Only when it was transformed into film, first in the 1922 unauthorized silent movie Nosferatu, and then later as the Universals pictures classic with Bela Lugosi, did Dracula find its mainstream audience. Today, along with Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, and other classic monsters, the influence of Stoker's creation is felt in every vampire story; his work is likely as immortal as the vampire itself.
