Overview

Alex Agunas is a Southern California Native American. His heritage is Spanish mixed with Tongva and Serrano, the tribes who historically inhabited the Los Angeles Basin, San Gabriel Valley, and local mountain ranges. It is believed that his ancestry includes individuals who lived at Cucamonga Village and near Indian Hill in Claremont, but were moved to the San Gabriel Mission in the early 1800’s. Alex is an engineering student at Pomona College. There have always been stories of ghosts and haunted places there, but he is skeptical and believes in science and technology, no matter what his elders would say. However, things begin to happen that he has no explanation. There is a house on campus that is supposed to be haunted. He was in there one night for a benefit and heard strange noises. In addition, he had dinner one night in Downtown Upland, another historical area just east of Claremont. The restaurant had reports of an apparition, and he saw what looked to be a mist moving under it s own power. However, Alex reached the moment of truth one day while day while sitting, bored, in his philosophy class. He looked out the window to the quad and saw something he could not understand or explain. Forced to re-define his belief system, Alex reaches out to his elders and some paranormal researchers for answers. What he finds leads him on a journey to Northern Arizona and the Hopi Reservation, where he learns about their traditions and time travel, but in a way, he never thought possible. This book is a work of science fiction and young adult horror, but there are actual places and historical events and areas interwoven through the story. The idea was to incorporate the local history and stories in a hope to increase interest including that of the Native Americans, plus entertain the fact that there are still many things we do not know for certain about the universe that surrounds us.
