Overview

IN MARCH 1923, the first issue of Weird Tales hit the sidewalk newsstands. Subtitled the “Unique Magazine,” it created a venue for weird fiction and poetry. Until then, there was no magazine devoted to horror, fantasy and the occult. In September 1954, after 279 issues, publication stopped. FROM the VAULTS of WEIRD TALES: VOLUME 5 collects TWELVE tales gathered from the original 279 issue run. The Unwanted (Mary Elizabeth Counselman, Jan, 1951, Vol. 43, #2); The Purple Cincture (Harold Thompson Rich, Aug. 1925, Vol. 6, #2); The Gallows (I. W. D. Peters, March 1923, Vol. 1, #1); The Spirits of the Lake (Alonzo Deen Cole, Nov./Dec. 1941, Vol. 36, #2); School for the Unspeakable (Manly Wade Wellman, Sept. 1937, Vol. 30, #3); The Monster-God of Mamurth (Edmond Hamilton, Sept. 1935, Vol. 26, #3); Mr. Hyde—and Seek (Malcolm M. Ferguson, May 1950, Vol. 42, #4); The Cranberry Goblet (Harold Lawlor, Nov. 1945, Vol. 39, #2); The Book of the Dead (Frank Gruber, Nov./Dec. 1941, Vol. 36, #2); The Haunter of the Dark (H. P. Lovecraft, Dec. 1936, Vol. 28, #5); The Flower-Women (Clark Ashton Smith, May 1935, Vol. 25, #5); The People of the Black Circle (Robert E. Howard, Sept. 1934, Vol. 24, #3).
