Maybe it’s magic, and maybe it’s religion—Mary just knows it works and the dark monk promises to teach her everything she wants to know, although power like this exacts a terrible price, a price she will have to pay—or someone, some hero, will have to pay for her—when she returns at last to the Valley of the Earthly Paradise. . . . But Mary will learn nothing if the Inquisition finds her first. . . .
