Story Fragment:“Can’t you dig any faster? Damn it!”“Well, how deep did you dig, in the first place?” I asked.“Pretty deep,” Henry said and added, “Ah, you might find a few things there, too?”I stopped digging and said, “Things? What kind of things, Henry?”“Just some bones, that’s all.”“The journal not there?” Louis asked, while watching around. His police instincts had kicked in, since the slamming of the door.“It’s here, alright. Henry put other stuff in the hole.”“Actually… my trophies were there already, I just put the journal underneath them.”“Trophies? Oh, God!” I said trying not to think about what I might find there.I told Louis what else might be in that hole.“Oh, gross!”Objects kept on flying out of the windows. All of a sudden, someone started banging on the other side of the wall, where we were squatting at.Louis and I couldn’t help to jump some.“What the hell?” Louis said -his hand on his holster, ready to take the gun out again.Soon enough I started finding what seemed to be animal bones -birds, mainly.I had to wince, every time I dug a bone or a bird’s skull out.“You want me to help?” Louis asked, still looking around and trying to ignore the constant banging on the wall, coming from inside the house.“No, Louis. One of us playing with dirt today is enough,” I said loudly so he could hear me, above the banging noise.A moment later, I felt what seemed to be marbles, under the dirt. I pulled out some and put them on the palm of my hand. Louis and I took a look.“Buttons?”I turned to look at Henry.“Ah, yeah, I went through a ‘buttons phase’ when I was eight… I just couldn’t get enough buttons for my collection, back then…” He laughed, nervously.Louis shook his head and turned to look at the yard again; things were still coming out of the windows and landing on the backyard.“Just how many people are in there?” Louis said.I turned to look at Henry, while I pulled loads of dirt from the hole with both my hands.Henry seemed a little embarrassed and still restless. After pulling more skulls, bones and buttons I found what felt like a brick. It was wrapped in thick plastic.“Found it,” I said.Louis nodded and said, “Let’s get the hell out of here.”I pulled the brick and handed it to Louis. We both stayed close to the house, to avoid being hit by one of the flying objects coming out of the windows. It seemed that as we moved around the house’s perimeter, the noise on the walls followed us. Some objects flew out of other windows, too.I noticed that some windows remained intact, for some reason; and whatever was inside the house, would wait until we passed under one of the broken windows to start throwing things at us again. We finally made it to the front of the property, and Louis rushed to the car. I stayed in the front, looking at the house.“What are you doing, J.J.?” Louis asked, form the car.“I have to see The One,” I said, distractedly.
