Overview

Set two years after "Raven of the South", Fodhla finds herself on a mission halfway across the world, in strange lands with strange customs, far different from what she is used to. Against her will, she has left her young son behind in Tír Glas, and she must now rely on her wits and diplomatic skills to accomplish her task and get back to him. She joins the emissary of the very Sword she is sent to parlay about, as well as a young blacksmith and an enigmatic being with strange abilities. Her travels must take her across the greatest empire in the world, to see its ruler to deliver an important message, all the while she learns about the culture she is surrounded by. Awestruck by some things, she also learns of the dark side of this foreign society and she needs to make difficult choices on numerous occasions, while battling crippling doubts concerning her role in the events of Raven of the South. Back in Tír Glas, Fodhla's friends and allies are left caring for her son, the new Ard Righ of Tír Glas and still a toddler. The country is, for the most part, at peace after the Southlander conquest, but beneath the surface lurks malcontents and potential rebels. Fodhla, seen by most people as a hero for her attempt to save their lives in "Raven of the South", is seen by others as a turncoat, and by extension, her son is seen as a target. Both in the Lotus Empire and Tír Glas, major events are about to play out, and very little, if anything, is as it seems on the surface.
