First published in 1916, Songs of a Vagrom Angel is an early example of free verse poetry in the English language. Its scribe, Elsa Barker, claimed the poems were given to her by an angelic presence she called her "Vagrom Angel." In the sleepless span of twenty-two hours she penned all forty-two "songs" through a process of automatic writing.
