Confronted with inexplicable dreams and waking visions, a rock ’n’ roll drummer meets a feisty Chalone Indian middle-school teacher and the children she has taken on a field trip. While exploring the striking terrain of California’s Pinnacles National Monument, they are drawn together, a connection so intense it leads them to discover their relationships two centuries earlier, during the Spanish conquest of North America's West coast. The power of the attraction, however, stems from long before that, all the way back to the beginning. Possessed by spirits portrayed as birds and animals in the creation myth of the Chalone Tribe, they converge, as always, in the present, with the primal desire to create and nurture material existence. But an opposite force is also at work in an equally powerful spirit, a demon intent on annihilating existence altogether.
