Overview

Just then a most unusual young woman dropped the toe pad of her right roller blade skidding to a stop in front of the park bench where Gaius Julius was sitting. “Hi, I just love your dog, he is sooooo beautiful. May I pet him?” she crooned. She was beautiful. Wolf’s eyes fixated upon the slight pulsations of her carotid. Tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth, he looked expectantly at Gaius Julius, and then into the eyes of the girl. ‘Yikes,’ he suddenly expostulated in his mind, ‘Master … she’s a hunter!’ “Holy shit!” the girl recognized the fire in Wolf’s eyes at the same instant she heard his words in her mind. In a flash, she turned as if to go when, with impossible speed Gaius Julius pulled her onto the bench next to himself. “You are a young one and not yet well trained. I’ve a dozen or so questions, and your answers will determine if you live to feed another day”, said Gaius Julius. “Now, where is your master? Of what blood line is he. Speak quickly or die!” The girl’s eyes flashed defiance. “His name is Alphas and he claims lineage from Festus the Primogenitor.’ At the name of his hated Uncle Festus, rage welled within Gaius Julius’ mind. It took all of his strength to control his wrath yet remain outwardly calm, “Festus is not the Primogenitor,” he hissed. Gasping, she suddenly felt fear. She needed to know more of this ancient one who claimed Festus was not the true primogenitor. She gathered all of her courage, “Tell me. If Festus isn't the Primogenitor, then who is? “ Inexplicably he suddenly calmed, looked wistful and then even smiled. “What is your name?” “I’m called Cynthia by the clan.” "Well Cynthia, what do you know about ancient Rome?" "Only what little we studied in high school." "Ah, then to answer your question I must tell you of my beginnings.” I was born in Rome on July 12, 100 BC and though my family was wealthy, politically powerful and impeccably aristocratic, unfortunately, all that was to be of little use to me. You see my Uncle, Festus Caesar falsely accused my father of treason, saw him tried and condemned to death upon the Tarpeian Rocks leaving me orphaned, penniless and homeless. However, the goddess Fortuna took pity on me and arraigned to have me taken in and raised by my tutor Thelipidies Drictus, the famous pedagogue. Although I could trace my family to the goddess Venus as well as Rome’s founders, the twins Romulus and Ramos, who were themselves descendants of the god Mars I was none the less stained with my father’s sins. I was a traitor’s Son, an odium which Uncle Festus’ made sure always remained fresh in the minds of all those who mattered: Thus if I was to advance in life it was the military or nothing. Along the way to my first posting, Drack, my gladiator guardian and I were attacked by assassins hired by Uncle Festus’ sons and in the fray I slew my first man. Contrary to all logic I found the killing, carnage and gore exhilarating, even pleasurable. Later when crossing the Mediterranean, we were attacked by pirates and in the fray I was once again thrown into mortal combat, this time with one of the Pirate Captains. Though he was half again my size and many times more experienced I again demonstrated my talent for killing by dispatching the pirate Captain to the nether world, less his head. Once joined to the Roman army in Numidia my Uncle contrived to place Drack and I in the forefront of the army to die in battle. Drack, in saving my life, lost his, but not before inundating me with his blood. Thus baptized my metamorphosis accelerated energizing me as never before. With my senses and strength were strangely amplified, I became an awful apparition to behold. The Roman army with me at their head became a killing machine scything the enemy as if they were ripened grain dried upon the stalk. Thus I, Gaius Julius Caesar, the Vampire, Primogenitor was born!
