Cadence Pride returns for her second case as a Glimpser—a link between the living world and the recently deceased. She is more skilled now, and with one successful case behind her, surely the second mystery will be easily solved. But, for the 13-year-old resident of Common Creek, the obstacles just keep piling up. The second case requires her to help a child ghost reveal some deeply hidden secrets about his accidental death. But there’s a problem: Teenage Glimpsers are never assigned child ghosts, because it takes a really experienced Glimpser with incredible talent to communicate with such a young spirit. Always there to help Cadence as her Ghost Guide, Minerva LeClaire, cannot understand why the Alterworld Headquarters, the official office of deceased affairs, would put Cadence through such a challenge as she is just starting on her Glimpsing journey. And when she inquires, she can never seem to find the authority behind the abnormal decision. Through her own detective work, Minerva finds herself wrapped up in a past misfortune that oddly has ties to Cadence’s new case, and the Ghost Guide cannot decide if HQ has simply turned loose of the rulebook that guides the Alterworld, or if maybe dark ghosts from the Fallen Realm are behind the confusion. While the communication barriers and other impossibilities with the child ghost continue, Cadence finds herself once again wishing that either her younger brother, Grant, or her best friend, Aubree Webb, could be part of her Glimpsing world, but she is bound to secrecy. As more rules are broken and chaos seems to upset the order between worlds, Cadence may find that Glimpsing comes with too high a price for a teenager’s allowance. She watches her family and friends become the focus of the Fallen Realm’s fury, fights a fiery ghost in her own kitchen, and learns someone high up the chain of command in the Alterworld is studying her every move.
