Overview
He calls himself Ferdinand. Lucie awakens to find herself pulled from death by a creature in the shape of a man, who explains he has saved her soul and taken her as his newest bride. Still reeling from the shock and grief of her own tragic demise, she allows him to introduce her to his world of indulgence and savagery only to discover a series of ugly truths about Ferdinand and the lives of his first three wives. Struggling with her own traumas and burdened by knowledge of Ferdinand’s true intentions, Lucie begins to play the part of the inconspicuous new pet, plotting in secret to secure the freedom and safety of herself and those she loves by killing a monster. With the help of one of Ferdinand’s timid fellow victims and a crazed self-proclaimed vampire slayer, Lucie races against time to guarantee her captor’s undoing. But to do so, she must both learn his history and come to terms with her own. By presenting the traditional vampire narrative in a way that allows people to see real, more modern monsters in its antagonist, this beautifully poetic novel gives traditional characters and tropes new roles and new meanings, creating a story that feels relatable and gripping while at the same time maintaining its more supernatural elements.
