Overview
In a Glass Darkly (1872) is a collection of five tales presented as items drawn from the posthumous papers of Dr. Martin Hesselius, an occult detective. The short stories “Green Tea”, “The Familiar”, and “Mr. Justice Harbottle” each include elements which appear to be otherworldly, but which can be explained scientifically. The novella “The Room in the Dragon Volant” is a mystery, featuring a slow-witted narrator whose chivalrous nature gets him into trouble. Finally, the novella “Carmilla,” Le Fanu’s most famous work, is a fully supernatural tale featuring a lesbian vampire. This story greatly influenced Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897), along with films like Vampyr (1932), and The Vampire Lovers (1970). Collectively, the stories in this volume represent some of Sheridan Le Fanu’s finest and best known works of gothic fiction. The Classroom Classics collection from Necropolis Press features classic works of fiction with new cover art, introductions, explanatory footnotes, and study questions for classroom use.
