Overview

For the past two decades, writer and filmmaker David W. Keffer has been crafting horror short stories. Encounters is the first official collection of those offerings. Meant to entertain and delight horror fans, Encounters explores the unknown and covers a gambit of creatures, from aliens to ancient evils, from boogeymen to legendary beasts, and ultimately against man's biggest nemesis -- himself. “You’re not supposed to see them.” I jumped at the sound of a human voice. A vagrant lay beside the dumpster. Claw marks were healing on the left side of his face. They were too deep to have come from an alley cat. The vagabond had ripped clothes and he was missing several teeth. Various scratches and gouges indicated he'd been mauled by some animal. The man’s eyes slid from side to side and then fixed on the decaying rail space at the end of the alley. I turned my head to the rubble, then back to the man. He simply stared. "Don't let them know you see them." I side-stepped him and moved down the alley. " -- Excerpt from Sciophobia. “Yeah?” I answered, expecting to hear Amber’s voice. The phone yielded static for just a moment, then belted out a sickening shriek, a combination of nails on a chalkboard with a resonant hiss. I dropped the phone. After catching my breath, I searched frantically with my free hand to find it, unwilling to take my eyes off of the unfamiliar road. The shrieking gave way momentarily and was replaced by a spine tingling sound - a child laughing. The little girl giggled for a moment, then began to sing a disturbing lullaby: “Circle circle of the ground, take this body down down, give to me the eyes to finally see, all the powers given me.” -- Excerpt from The Winding Staircase
