“Was that a pig?” She asked him, as her eyes went wide in amazement.‘I told some of the animals that were running loose to follow us…to…feed…And I didn’t realise they’d all come at once like…’ He tried his best to convey his regret as he spoke to her mind, though the look on her face said she was far from happy.‘Remind me to beat you, if we live through the night.’ A deer, she shook her head as the animal bounded past. A fucking deer.‘We call them jeln’s.’ He explained.‘Thank you. Now I’ll be able to say I died because of a fucking jeln.’ She wasn’t sure if she thought or whispered, as more animals came rushing towards the shocked army, who instantly began catching the animals.“It was…gift.” Nordan said, in perfect Shul’th’skanian.“Now you speak?” Her voice rose a little higher than she had meant, though her anger was pushing to compete with it.‘Please don’t hit me.’ The boy leaned back, his hands raising to cover his head.“Hark may be right.” She told him, pulling up her horse and pushing him to the ground, adding. “I’d not want to give you brain damage.”“Broken leg not better.” He shot back, to her consternation.“So, now you fucking speak?” Grabbing him by the arm as she dropped to the ground and deciding against using his ear, she dragged him over to pay her respects to T’th’ka and kicking a rabbit out of her way as she did.‘Don’t be so mean to them.’ Nordan pleaded, in her mind, the contradiction enough to jerk him along all the faster.“It’s best you don’t talk for a…” The image of a giant deer appeared in her mind, along with Nordan’s struggles, and she knew they were in danger. But before she could use her powers, the mighty animal collapsed to the ground, peppered with arrows shot with deadly accuracy. There was cheering all around them by the time she reached the pile of ashes that marked the end of T’th’ka, sorcerer supreme and champion of the people. And, in a strange way, she had come to like him in the short time they’d talked and wished that they’d had longer.“Just stand there by my side and don’t move. Don’t even think about mov…” She was surprised to see the boy kneeling down and placing his hands on the ground, which was probably some sort of custom that they had in this lan…‘I was acting like a dog.’ He told her, bluntly interrupting her thoughts.‘Then stand up, you little…’“LOOK OUT, KLAIRA.” Hark shouted as wave after wave of animals ran through the ranks of soldiers, coming close to the funeral pyre.“Don’t disturb me.” She calmly replied, as she reached down pull Nordan to his feet. “I’m saying goodbye to T’th’ka.” And in her mind, she added to Nordan. ‘And I swear I’ll throw you on the fire if one of those animals hit me.’‘I thought it would be nice to bring a gift.’ He sent an image of him standing in fine clothes, holding a neatly tied box and smiling at whoever it was that opened the door, in his mind.‘That’s only in children’s books.’ She snapped back. ‘Shit, shit, SHITTTT.’‘Sorry.’‘We’ll discuss it later.’ Stepping forward, she thought about what she had with her to offer, though knew it would be a hollow gesture. She had spent no time with the sorcerer and would settle for singing a short song that she knew and usually reserved for when one of her wolves died.“So, you’re just going to sit there?” Hark demanded, as he backed up close enough to speak without shouting.“Don’t be so rude, Hark.” The thought of what was to come next filled her with so much dread that it felt as if she was already drunk.‘You don’t have to worry about it.’ Nordan assured her, earning another glare.“What did you…”‘Nothing.’ He quickly promised. ‘But they’re happy.’
