Overview
"That seems awfully low," you say. "Yes. Well, it was published before 1850," she replies, trying to explain away her small price. You tell her that you have been unable to find any other copies of this book, and that you think it might be rare -- but she doesn't appear convinced. You ask her why she isn't willing to go higher than $200. "Because I don't need the money," she says, then adds with a smirk, "and because you're so young." You thank her for her honesty, and leave the store with your purchase. You exit the building into the street, where you see several people milling around waiting for cabs. A man stops you and asks if he can help you get a cab. He explains that his company owns many taxis, and would be happy to provide you with transportation home. "But first," he continues, "we'd like you to take part in our experiment." He hands you a card. On it is written "Rent-a-Cab".You read the card. "We would like you to call us when you are ready to return home. We will pick you up anywhere in New York City for free. Just give us a call, and we will send someone out to bring you home." You wonder what they mean by "anywhere in the city." "In Manhattan, certainly," the man assures you. "And Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island too."
