Overview

Disinherited from the throne he believes should belong to his clan, rejected by the woman he loves, estranged from his father and uncertain of his place in a war-torn world, Altir Ilanarion searches for his path. Meanwhile, his kinsmen scheme and plot to overthrow their rival and regain the throne -- but all the while, the Liar's servants lie in wait. Stealing the Sun is the first book of a trilogy. It is literary, character-driven fantasy that takes traditional themes, drags them into dark places, and changes them into unspeakable monstrosities. It may appeal to readers of Richard K. Morgan and Joe Abercrombie.I wrote Stealing the Sun in around 2001-2002, although it was revised before publication. I wanted to create a world based on the natural ecosystems of wild California; to examine, twist, and possibly abuse some of the tropes of classic high fantasy; and to create a nonhuman species who would be not only intriguing but at least somewhat scientifically believable (if you take epigenetic theory a bit beyond the beyonds). Most of all, I wanted to tell the story of the characters who came into my imagination and clamored to be heard. There is no human POV anywhere in this series, as it is entirely from the point of view of the People -- and to find out who and what the People are, start reading. Readers have praised the drama and narrative drive of these books, finding them hard to put down once started!
