Overview

Mr. Utterson is a well-regarded London lawyer with a general tolerance for the vices of others. But when his good friend and client, the esteemed Dr. Jekyll, drafts a will leaving everything to a certain Mr. Edward Hyde, a singularly deplorable man, Utterson believes his friend has been blackmailed. As he investigates, Utterson’s distaste for Mr. Hyde swells to loathing, his concern to outright fear. Henry Jekyll refuses to discuss the matter, even as Hyde’s actions escalate from socially offensive to criminal. When Mr. Hyde’s crimes culminate in murder, the horrified doctor finally swears off all dealings with the man. Edward Hyde is gone, disappeared having fled from justice, and all seems well. But not for long. This version of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic gothic tale sticks closely to the original with adjustments made for clarity. Primarily, some vocabulary has been updated and the large blocks of text have been broken up into shorter paragraphs for ease of reading. UK spellings have been changed to US standard.A story summary is provided, and bonus materials include the transcript of the author's Baby Book, and The Christmas Sermon first published in in Scribner’s Magazine in December 1888 and then collected in Across the Plains with Other Memories and Essays in 1892.
