Overview

The search for the lost Dutchman's gold, has taken on a whole new meaning. Native Indian Ghosts who appear and disappear at will, massacres on untold numbers. Gold to be pick up off the scared burial grounds, leave men laying on the ground for the buzzards. It was a quiet morning in the central Arizona desert summer; actually hot as hell. The only sounds came from doves and quails. As they sang in harmony, it brought peace to one’s soul as if to say, "This is what heaven is like." Moments later the sound of horses’ hoofs overtook the doves’. A group of Pima Indians were headed into a sacred area in the Superstition Mountains. The farmers of the Salt River Valley had heard stories about “strange sounds, people who disappeared, mysterious deaths, which gave an overall fear of the mountain.” Hence the name Superstition. Yet it had several other names before the birth of the Superstition legend. This area has also harbored Apache Indians during their treks on the run from Cibecue Creek to Mexico as the Cavalry chased them in the mid to late 1800s. The Indians were about to bury an old Chief. The procession was led by the Medicine named ‘Two Feathers.’ The Pima Indians believed they should not impede the spirit of the deceased from finding its way into the afterlife. They also believed they should help guide or aid the spirit’s ascent. As they completed the ceremony and were about to leave, a group of three gold prospectors on horsebacks from unknown places and one man pulling a donkey stumbled upon the Indians’ ceremony. They stopped dead in their tracks; not being gunmen or fighters, they were terrified. They elected to run away as fast as they could. The Indian leader ordered a group of five men to follow and kill the men, as they had entered the sacred area. This was only the beginning. They caught and killed two, but one got away a mile or so up the road; he stopped and hid himself behind a large rock outcropping. The Indian warriors did not find him and as they returned back to the group, they seemed to have vanished into thin air in a puff of smoke or dust. He watched them leave from behind the rocks; he was dumbfounded having, never seen such a thing as that. They were heading back to the ceremony and disappeared instantly. Once back, they reported their killing and the escaped man. They completed their ceremony and left for the burial grounds. The Medicine man stayed on for another hour and then headed back alone. Julie, the lone surviving prospector, waited for some time before leaving. In route back home, he ran into the Medicine man, who immediately attacked him on horseback. They ended up fighting hand-to-hand, as they fell to the ground. Julie got the upper hand and was about to kill the Medicine man lying on the ground with a big rock. The Medicine man, for some reason, just layed flat as if to say, “Hit me,” and he began to chant. Julie did not kill him, as the rock was perched over his head. He got up off the ground, holding the large rock, ready to fire it, then took away the Indian’s knife. The Medicine man got up and attempted to hand him six feathers and a handful of yellow metal (gold) as he made some gestures toward the sacred grounds. Julie took the items cautiously; it's as if they were best friends. They parted, never to see each other again. He was going to head back home, but he wanted to bury his friend first. He looked at the feathers and gold handed him, then he put them away. As he looked back at the Medicine man, riding away, there was a puff of dust, and then he disappeared into thin air like a ghost. He chalked it up to the wind. Little did he know of the power he had just witnessed and the fortune that lay within his saddlebags. It holds the key to the bonanza in the Superstition Mountains.
