“Is he gone yet?” Ever is huddled against me trembling. I can feel her fingernails clawing into my arm from her panicked grip, not out of aggression but from fear. Her eyes are wide. “Sh!” I whispered back. “Quiet.” I listened. There it is again. The floor boards in the house creak from another room in the house, signaling that one of the intruders is still in the house. Right now its in the living room! Carefully, I take Ever’s hand as we try to make it to our safe place, in the closet. Just a bit further. But its hard to move quietly in an old house like this! Damn it! How did it get in the house?! There’s a vampire in our house, hunting us! We hear the growl of its desiccated throat as it suddenly picks up our scent. And its pace changed from slow stealth to moving towards us. Oh no! It knows we’re here! If we can just get to the safety of the [Sanctuary] entrance! No, no, no… We won’t make it in time! I can hear it running down the hall towards us while we’re already moving. How do we get out of this?! This guy is anywhere from 10 to 20 levels higher than we are!
