Overview

Pu Songling (1640-1715), the famous Chinese ancient story writer, was born at a declining landlord family, and lived during the founding of the Qing Dynasty. His father turned to trade but could not make a success. Such was their poverty that the young son was laughed at by the neighbors for trying to woo a girl without any wedding gifts. From the age of nineteen, he took part in the imperial examinations at the county, prefecture and provincial levels and each time came out first, but he could not get an ideal post. He made a tour in the south to be a tutor and returned to settle down at his home village in 1671. It was said that he set up a cottage teahouse by the roadside to treat the travelers with tea free of charge. He chatted with them over tea. In that way he collected tales from the travelers and from his friends. He retold those tales and wrote a dozen volumes of them at his old age in the cottage; hence the title of his collection: Weird Tales from a Teahouse, or simply, Liaozhai in Chinese. The tales reflect his own times, making clear his likes and dislikes. In his tales, the moral is always evident. Many of the characters are fox-fairies, plant spirits, house goblins and ghosts, which, though supernatural beings, are endowed with human qualities. The major themes of his tales are three: revealing the crimes in the dark period and of the corrupt officials; criticizing the ridiculous educational system in which Chinese feudal dynasties selected candidates for civil and military posts and reflecting the irrationality of the feudal matrimony. Besides, there are also many miscellaneous myths and legends. Lots of the tales end with his comments, by which he tries to help the readers to understand what the relevant tales really mean. In the book the translators present just thirty five tales of his and they are typical of his writing style.
