Overview

After a completely humiliating experience, which lands her in the emergency room, Cadence Pride, age 13, is shocked to learn she has a very special talent. She's a Glimpser-someone who has the ability to see and talk to ghosts. After meeting her Ghost Guide, the brainy, know-it-all Minerva LeClaire, Cadence begins to understand she is a link between the living world and afterworld. As a Glimpser, Cadence is assigned cases to help ghosts solve unresolved issues from their previous lives so they can officially move on to the afterworld. This all sounds thrilling to Cadence, but when she learns her first case will involve helping the school bully (the one who happens to be responsible for her emergency room fiasco) she isn't so sure her new abilities are worth the trouble she finds. The town of Common Creek doesn't seem quite so common as Cadence pursues the case and encounters a shapeless creature with a terrifying message from beyond, battles a possessed computer, and is locked in an invisible prison by an evil ghost from the Fallen Realm who seeks to destroy the talent she is just beginning to develop. Cadence realizes balancing junior high crises, friends, and family with her new duties may be too much for one teenager to handle, especially when she has to keep her Glimpsing activities a secret from everyone in the living world. Even if she and Minerva can crack the first case, there is the troubling matter of the ghosts from the Fallen Realm who had been silent for many years, but who suddenly find Cadence quite intriguing.
