Overview
Malik Ashcroft is an eighteen-year-old Black teenager who is made into a soul vampire the night he finishes studying for final exams. Xavier, the vampire who creates him, tells him that vampires must bury their human bodies deep underground to protect the soul still within. Xavier calls him a “rarity” and that he is “beautiful”, but Malik cringes at the thought of joining Xavier’s family of vampires. Xavier, created by a wayward, traveling soul vampire who only kills the workers of iniquity, was born in 1820s America. Birthed on a small slave plantation in antebellum Alabama, Xavier suffers mentally and physically because he is Sam Carroll’s son, the white master of the plantation. Although his mother, Sarah, initially tells him to be proud of his heritage as the son of slave-owner, Ms. Hannah, Mr. Carroll’s wife, succeeds at getting him sent to the fields to toil as a field slave. Depressed at the loss of her children, Sarah becomes unattached from her son and Xavier has to find solace within a slave girl his age, Alexandria. With no other recourse, Xavier wishes to die and his wish is granted, but not in the ways in which he expected. With Malik turned into a soul vampire, he must deal with burying his human body, protecting his best friend, Jeremiah, from his own memories of death and bloodshed, Xavier’s coven of vampires, and holding on to a shred of his humanity. As a soul vampire, he experiences his own memories and the memories of others in ways that he never expected. In attempting to resist Xavier’s overtures to join his family, Malik decides to leave his hometown with Jeremiah in search of Xavier’s past. In his search, he stumbles across the soulless, or vampires who have desecrated their human bodies in order to fully obtain and control their vampire abilities at the expense of their humanity. Malik must decide if he is willing to destroy Xavier, continue to fall in love with Jeremiah, or grant Jeremiah’s wish to become a soul vampire.
