'Shadows in the Dark and Other Ghost Stories' is a collection of paranormal stories by Rini Basu. The first story, 'Shadows in the Dark' deals with dark witchcraft and its evil outcome. The sinister atmosphere created in the story can give the reader sleepless nights. In the second story 'Morgan House' the author narrates her own horrific experience in a haunted guest house in a hill station of India. The gloomy backdrop will mentally prepare the reader for paranormal activities. Psychology plays a major role in the perception of the supernatural. There are lots of evil happenings in the third story 'Evil Spirit'. The spirit is evil no doubt, and a serial killer as well. He kills just for pleasure. The next story, 'Golconda Fort- A Love Story' deals with romance and reincarnation. A medieval Sultan of India falls in love with an ordinary Hindu girl and marries her. The girl is reborn in the current century and wants to get reunited with the spirit of her lover from her previous birth. The medieval ambience and royal aura are well depicted in the story. Music plays a major part in this story, which makes it ideal for a movie. The fifth story 'Haunted Ruin' is based on horror. The backdrop is a beautiful and serene village in West Bengal where the author and her family had gone for a vacation. Atmosphere is dark and eerie. 'Guardian Spirit of Arunachal' is the last, but not the least story in this book. This is a true story and the reader will surely fall in love with 'Jaswant Singh', the guardian spirit of Arunachal. The beautiful description of nature may allure the reader to visit Arunachal Pradesh in India. The stories of Golconda Fort and Jaswant Singh are different as their ambience is not dark and sinister like the other four stories. Romance and patriotism are the keynotes in these stories. Overall this book is enjoyable.
