Overview
Victorian England and the Dark Ages chillingly intertwine, linked by an antique bracelet. Reincarnation? Or a wild obsession that echoes a timeless legend? A fiery Captain of Horse pursues his queen, and forbidden love and revenge haunt torch-lit halls. In a gas-lit London Art Gallery, Tara meets the cultured and attractive Alex Granger. Later, she meets Paul Bartolini, a darkly charismatic artist, and the scene is set. As she becomes entangled in the ancient triangle, Tara fears for her life. This dual-time mystery begins at the City Art Gallery in Victorian London. Tara is affected by a portrait of Guinevere. Briefly, she enters a world of intrigue and betrayal, and a passion so powerful it threatens to topple a kingdom. She sinks to the floor unconscious, and Alex comes to her aid. At home in Manchester she is haunted by vivid dreams and bizarre experiences as the legend unfolds. Tara marries Alex, and they travel north to his childhood home, the wild and scenic Rowangarth. Alex is kind and considerate, but their marriage lacks passion. Tara is suspicious of his relationship with his jealous sister. The ancient tragedy replays, when at Brantwood on Coniston Water, Ruskin introduces her to the wildly attractive and mysterious Paul Bartolini, the gifted and visionary artist who painted the portrait. . Handsome, intense and wildly unconventional, Bartolini, like his fellow artists in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, is obsessed with the Arthurian legend. He is intent on persuading Tara to sit for a new portrait of Guinevere. As the past overtakes the present and endangers her life, Tara has suspicions about his identity. Paul has a premonition that either himself or Alex must die. Tragedy strikes and Tara leaves Rowangarth one stormy night for a terrifying journey alone. Or is she alone? Compelling, intriguing and at times chilling, the book ends with a tantalising twist. Suited to fans of Barbara Erskine books.
