Overview

Myrmidons takes place in and around New York City in the present day. It is the story of Andrew Goldstein who, after finding a decades old school report in a second hand book, is shaken by the insane tone and content of the child’s writing. Despite the warnings of those closest to him he becomes increasingly obsessed with the idea that “Tommy Smith”, now grown, could be carrying out some murderous plan. This obsession opens the door to a world he’s never known, bringing him to the Abel Society, a refuge for people who have been touched by evil. The Director of the Society joins him in his search for Smith, although he knows all too well the price they may have to pay. Goldstein becomes a magnet for those with a story to tell and finds himself mesmerized by their tales, even as the new realities he is forced to accept take their toll. His mind is opened to sights and experiences that he never suspected were all around him. He races to find, while there is still time, a man who may not even exist while evading unseen pursuers who may not really be following him. His search for the author of the essay costs him his girlfriend, his friends and his career. In the end he is irresistibly drawn to commit acts that may cost him everything. The narrative of Goldstein’s search is interspersed with entries from the Abel Society’s files and the stories of those crushed by their encounters with evil. Goldstein has no way of knowing which of these stories are real and which are fantasy, but they describe a world that may lie just under the surface of the one in which we live.
