Three ghostly tales. In 'Absolute Pitch', Paulus tells his story of the year before he met his only friends in the world at university, and rouses all their bitter ghosts of memories. In 'The Tunnels', a rag-tag band of musicians runs out of petrol driving through the Mersey tunnel after a gig, and one of them disappears forever. But forever is not forever in the labyrinthine maze, and whilst evil lurks in the hearts of men, something more sinister lies in wait beneath the river. In 'The Other Door', Marianna is governess to ten-year-old James Shevington, but as the long hot summer days merge into one another, the past and present shift and sprawl, and Marianna's dreams and nightmares revolve around an old family mausoleum deep in the woods, and the tragic death of a girl who died a century ago.
