Overview

May 11, 2012 will mark a new chapter in the Dark Shadows saga. Yes, I said Dark Shadows saga! For many movie goers, this new Tim Burton/Johnny Depp movie will be their first exposure to Dark Shadows; however, Dark Shadows and its main character, a vampire known as Barnabas Collins have a long and storied past. Dark Shadows first saw the light of day as a half hour gothic soap opera in 1966. Over its 5-year, 1,225 episode run, the show changed the face of afternoon soap operas forever and opened up a world of possibilities for followers of the show. It ultimately became known as “the show that kids ran home to see after school.” I should know, I was one of the legions of fans that watched religiously.Over the last 40+ years, Dark Shadows would go through a number of reincarnations that included other TV series, reruns and syndication, several movies, books, magazines, comic strips, comic books, and even audio tapes. This sort e-book is intended to provide the reader with an overview of the entire panorama that makes up the Dark Shadows legacy. Its primary propose is to present a brief synopsis of the various aspect of the Dark Shadows universe as well as insight into everyone favorite bloodsucker, Barnabas Collins. With this important background information, the reader should be able to better enjoy and understand many of the nuances that will likely appear in the movie. Hopefully, this knowledge will lead to a much better appreciation for the movie and the role of Barnabas, ably play by Depp. Unfortunately, Jonathan Frid, the original Barnabas Collins, passed away just weeks before the release of the new movie, so in some ways the opening of the movie will be bittersweet; but none the less exciting.
