Overview
Angelo Diotti, a famous continental concert violinist comes to New York to make his American debut. On the night before the performance, he attends a party and instantly falls in love with the cold-hearted daughter of a prominent banker: When presented with a violin equipped with an extra “fifth string” he learns that music played on this instrument enchants the listener, but brings death to the player…John Philip Sousa (November 6, 1854 – March 6, 1932) was best known as an American composer and conductor of the late Romantic era, known primarily for American military and patriotic marches. Because of his mastery of march composition, he is known as "The March King" or the "American March King" due to his British counterpart Kenneth J. Alford also being known as "The March King". Among his best-known marches are "The Liberty Bell", "The Thunderer", "The Washington Post", "Semper Fidelis" (Official March of the United States Marine Corps), and "The Stars and Stripes Forever" (National March of the United States of America). “The Fifth String” represented a remarkable departure “There is one thing that freezes a musician more than the deadliest physical cold, and that is the spiritual chill of an unresponsive audience!” -John Philip Sousa
