Overview
Thought he looked like a man in his twenties, Vladislav Comescu was much, much older. He had been fighting for as long as he could remember. He had tried doing other things, but killing was in his blood. It was the only thing he had ever been good at. He had killed men of every color and creed on every continent. When men no longer proved to be a challenge, Vlad began to hunt the things that men feared – the monsters that lurked in the darkness. That’s how he met Doctor Lucien Bennett, and his daughter Erica. Doctor Bennett was a crusader, in a war as old as time itself. It was not a war fought over lands or money. It was a war of light versus darkness fought for the souls of all people. But Doctor Bennet was not fighting on the light of light or darkness. He wasn’t fighting for souls. He was fighting for people, and he saw Vlad for what he truly was – a weapon. He's the perfect addition to the Doctor's band of warriors... a hunter of demons, a warrior without equal, one that might be able to turn the tide and save mankind from the forces of darkness and light. Though Vlad was a weapon in the eyes of Doctor Bennett, to the doctor’s sheltered daughter, he was something altogether different. When Erica looked at Vlad, her eyes filled with wonder. He was dangerous and exciting, all the things young women craved in the books she had read. If only he would look at her the same way… If only the world would stop spinning long enough for him to see her as anything other than Doctor Bennett’s daughter. But the world never stops spinning... until it does. Thomas Chapel grew up on the means streets of one of the America's largest cities. There wasn't much in the way of opportunities for a poor kid growing up in the projects. He joined a gang in order to survive and provide for his family. Then a rival gang took away everything he had been fighting for. He swore he would kill them or die trying. He might have kept that promise if Doctor Bennett hadn't shown him something else worth fighting for. William Kessler was a mage... a young mage... entirely too young to wield that kind of power. His parents saw his gifts as the work of dark forces, and had abandoned the boy. Luckily, he had been discovered by a master of the arcane arts who had raised William and taught him how to use his gifts. But powerful wizards make powerful enemies, one of whom had murdered Billy's master while the young boy slept. When Doctor Bennett found him, he was scared and alone. The Doctor took the boy in, giving him a home and family, and teaching him the ways of magic. Vincent Ferraro had served Doctor Bennett for years. He was a technological wizard in the truest sense of the word, able to bind the mystical energies of the universe into fantastic devices. His role was not glamorous. He was not a great warrior like Vlad or Chapel. He was not a powerful spell-caster like Billy or the Doctor. But his role was just as important. He designed and maintained all the things that allowed this motley band of misfits to hold their own against angels and demons, gods and monsters. The war they’re fighting has been waging for nearly as long as the universe has existed. The foes they face are immensely powerful, wielding the power of creation itself. IT is an unwinnable war against impossible odds. The problem with unwinnable wars is that they cannot be won. Despite the books we read as children, the tortoise doesn’t beat the hare. Rarely, if ever, does the lowly David defeat the mighty Goliath. Tribes of loveable teddy bears living on forested moons don’t stand a chance against a technologically superior inter-galactic empire. Of course, even knowing that isn’t going to stop our heroes from trying.
