Overview

1941. The German blitzkrieg plunges into Eastern Europe. Ten year old Ulis’ childhood ended the night the planes burnt his city to ashes. As he flees Nazi death squads and Soviet partisans, he is driven deep into an ancient, malevolent forest, his only companion a fellow orphan named Lidyja. Lost in an endless mire, they are rescued by the strange denizens of a circus hiding deep within the forest. For a while, Ulis and Lidyja think they are safe, having found a new family, a strange and peculiar family of Siamese twins and silent ape kings and freaks and mystics. But the Ringmaster is dead and the children soon learn that the war outside holds no monopoly on horror. The Silent Circus is a dark fable in the tradition of Cormac McCarthy. Bleak and evocatively written, it examines the price of survival through the eyes of a child. EXCERPT Some forests were kind. This one was not. This forest was pitiless and hard. In winter it was dark and white and in summer it was green and malignant and always it held its secrets close to its chest. It had watched the greatest armies Europe had known slink ingloriously from defeat and it had not helped. The glories of the world had sent their hordes out and the forest had seen them all die. It had swallowed Legions. In verdant clearings mossy bones lay clasped in the bosom of metal armour and proud warriors' blades lay caressed by the roots of the trees. The forest waited for history to feed it with the patience of a stone. It had been here before man and it would laugh when all of men's glories were a mockery in its memory. Bears roamed, but they were not majestic. Harried elk were sometimes glimpsed but never caught. At night stoats worked bloody murder on hapless rabbits and it was right and good that that happened in this forest, where wisps told glimmer lies and lured fools to feed the bog. The trees roots held the soft and wet ground together but it would betray you in an instant, giving way to bottomless marsh that would swallow you whole, your only epitaph the brief life of a bubble's pop on the surface of the eternal mire. The forest was old and it was evil and it was hungry.
