Overview
In this drug-like tale the narrator, an assistant librarian with a fondness for drink befriends old Henry Stibbs, a gravedigger. 'To listen not only to his indifferent story-telling style but also to hear his relaxing, mesmerizing voice which acts as a tonic for his jangled nerves. But the librarian soon finds he will get more than he bargained for when Henry begins the story of 'the little empty room', part of a unused cottage hidden among the sycamores on the cemetery's fringe. As the old gravedigger speaks our narrator is riveted by his unexpected enthusiasm and insights. The 'little empty room' slowly assumes a monstrous significance as the librarian feels suddenly it is calling him, like the call of the Wild, or the Sea...calling to the emptiness of his life...
