Overview

Jesse was hard at work in Tucson when he received an email from an old friend. And though it was a busy Tuesday morning with a project deadline looming, he slipped out the back door without a word to anyone. Part road trip, part spiritual quest, part coming of middle age, this search for a lost friend traces back along the contours of his younger life to find what he may have left behind. And what he failed to notice. From the Publisher:Excerpts fromSong of the Second Wind:Jesse had often joked about running out the back door at work, but he had never actually done it. He sat for a moment in his truck with the sunshade still stretched accordion-like against the windshield. He couldn’t quite believe it. He had a strange sense of disassociation, as if he were watching himself. He wondered which was the real Jesse, the unwavering one, now folding the sunshade and starting up the truck, or the disbelieving soul looking on, wondering if he should not leave at least a voicemail for someone, letting them know, something. Jesse pulled out into the busy traffic and he was away. ***In the old stories they say, think of me and I will come. If you ever need me, just think of me and I will appear. Maybe that is how it works. Jesse had thought of Summer this morning on his way to work. He had remembered her and how she could pick up an object and hold it in her cupped hands and it would become the most beautiful object in the world. It didn’t matter what it was, a marble or a small rock or a pencil stub, it didn’t matter, she could show it to him cupped in her hands, half hidden, and it was the most beautiful object in the world, it was a trick she had. He had thought of her this morning on his drive to work. Maybe he needed her, but that was curious, for this morning wasn’t all that different from any other. A story of renewal…If I can tell the story right, it will happen. I know that it will happen. Old friends will be reunited. Lovers who by circumstance or death were not able to fulfill the promise of their love, will once more have their chance. Lost dogs will be found. If I can tell the story right, and if you hear it, nothing will ever be the same again. That is not too much to ask is it? That our lives be forever changed? That the sun rises one morning and the skies turn pink and the little birds, the little birds, sing? Listen..Many years have passed and we are older.
