Overview
""Uncle Silas: A Tale of Bartram Haugh"" is a gothic novel written by J. Sheridan Le Fanu. The story is set in the mid-19th century and follows the young heiress Maud Ruthyn, who is sent to live with her mysterious and reclusive uncle, Silas Ruthyn, at his estate, Bartram Haugh. As Maud begins to uncover the dark secrets of her family and the strange happenings at Bartram Haugh, she becomes increasingly fearful for her own safety. Along the way, she encounters a cast of eccentric characters, including the sinister French governess Madame de la Rougierre, the enigmatic and handsome Dudley Ruthyn, and the loyal family servant, Austin Ruthyn. The novel is a classic example of the Victorian gothic genre, with its atmospheric setting, suspenseful plot, and themes of madness, deception, and murder. It is considered one of Le Fanu's most popular and enduring works and has been adapted into several films and television series.I did not know well what to make of this woman, whom I feared with a vein of superstitious dread. I hated being alone with her after dusk in the school-room. She would sometimes sit for half an hour at a time, with her wide mouth drawn down at the corners, and a scowl, looking into the fire. If she saw me looking at her she would change all this on the instant, affect a sort of languor, and lean her head upon her hand, and ultimately have recourse to her Bible. But I fancied she did not read, but pursued her own dark ruminations, for I observed that the open book might often lie for half an hour or more under her eyes and yet the leaf never turned. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
