Overview
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a novel written by English author Mary Shelley (1797-1851) that tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who is an unconventional scientific experiment creates a hideous, sapient creature. Shelley began writing the story when she was 18 years old, and the first edition was published anonymously in London on January 1, 1818, when she was 20 years old. Her name appeared for the first time in the second edition, which was published in 1823. Shelley travelled through Europe in 1814, stopping in Gernsheim, which is 17 kilometres (11 miles) away from Frankenstein Castle, where an alchemist was engaged in experiments two centuries before.Later, she travelled in the Geneva (Switzerland) region, where much of the story takes place, and the topics of galvanism and occult ideas were topics of conversation among her companions, particularly her lover and future husband, Percy B. Shelley. Mary, Percy, and Lord Byron devised a contest to see who could write the best horror story. After days of contemplation, Shelley dreamed of a scientist who created life and was horrified by what he had created; her dream later evolved into the novel's plot.
