Overview
Early in the Twentieth Century, in a remote town cut off from the rest of the world, a group of men gather in the general store to await the return of a mysterious stranger who has been visiting their town - and influencing events - longer than anyone can remember. As they wait, they begin to speculate about this stranger's origins and his relationship to their small community. They begin to share stories about him. These stories become ever more amazing until, finally, the oldest man in town tells the most outrageous tale of all. While passing the time, they also share stories about each other, and of an extraordinary and beautiful woman with whom some of the men would want to become romantically involved. Introducing an exciting new work of fiction by the author, Kenneth Weiner. Written in a lavish style reminiscent of T.C. Boyle, Mervyn Peake, and the early works of James Joyce, Weiner evocatively creates a mythic world, larger than life, where fantasy and reality merge, and where the borders between these two realms magically blur. For those raised on the tall tales of Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill, Weiner has recreated an old-fashioned yarn of epic proportions sure to tickle the fancy of readers who enjoyed Mark Helprin's, 'A Winter's Tale.' Told in a vivid, narrative style, Weiner captures a world peopled with colorful characters and their interesting lives. A guaranteed good read.
