Overview
As the country recovered from the trauma and loss of the Civil War and struggled to rebuild, many moved westward to take advantage of new opportunities available on the plains in agricultural pursuits hoping to escape the congestion and pollution, and other growing problems of the eastern cities. However, it is inevitable that during such an upheaval and furor that there will arise individuals who will take advantage as a cover for despicable acts. And that is what brings us to the story here surrounding one Thomas Redwood and The Redwood Ranch in Barrington, Nebraska, built in 1892. Redwood moved along with the hordes back then, using the migration to cover his murderous deeds along the way. By the time Redwood had reached Nebraska, he knew it was time to lay low as he could feel authorities pressing down on his trail. The rural enclave of the small village of Barrington seemed a perfect refuge. You see, Redwood's victims had been without exception women, and he reasoned that it was unlikely to have women on the wild plains. He was hoping to hide as well as possible to remove the temptation he had been driven by in the past. And it was based on this that he built the Redwood Ranch. But a random trip into town one day sent Redwood tumbling right back into his old habits when he kidnapped his next victim, a young woman named Arietta Sharpe. Redwood assumed she was just another of many he had dispatched, but before she died, Arietta denounced him and his ranch with a wicked curse. Many months later, Redwood's body was found crushed under a collapsed building, but Arietta was nowhere to be found. The tale of his deeds soon caught up to the locals in Nebraska, and the ranch and the name of Thomas Redwood became the stuff of folklore and legend, and the ranch went vacant as no one dared to come close. But as time went by, new interest arose in the ranch as a real estate firm in Lincoln took over the property from a bank that was thrilled to have the thing off its hands. They had numerous clients clamoring for rural getaways such as the Redwood Ranch, and they saw a magnificent payday in the offering. The owners of the firm thus sent their marketing team out to the ranch to make a thorough and final assessment, including photographs and advertising copy and a strategy as to how best to position the property in the market. Owen Porter led his team, including Freya Turner, the photographer, and a new trio of associates with other special skills to prepare it for a listing. Beginning in Lincoln, Freya had her reservations about the ranch based on her background research, but the rest of the team just ridiculed and teased her about believing that the place might have some sort of black cloud attached to it. But once they arrived on location, with a growing tornado looming across the plains, Freya began to come across several things that made her wish she could have convinced them otherwise. As the evidence to confirm her suspicions arose, Freya worked hard to protect herself, and her teammates from what she could see was something perhaps not of this world. But can she move fast enough to make them see what is happening and to skirt the tornado as well? I suppose you will have to come along and see for yourself...
