Overview
Welcome to the Mystic Inn. The Mystic is a rather spirited bed and breakfast in the Pacific Northwest run by proprietors Zach Rael and his wife, Heather. The precise location is not really important because folks that need to find the inn always have; the problem is some of the guests are less corporeal than others. The place has been considered odd for a long time, but the original owner was not about to pass up the best parcel of land in the district over a bunch of superstitious mumbo jumbo. Malcom Cory built a grand house and lumber mill toward the end of the 19th century. He lived in his home for nearly forty years and never saw anything out of the ordinary. Neither did his wife or his son. But his daughter did. Folks used to talk about what a strange little thing she was: quiet, solemn, always seeing things, hearing things, and talking to herself… Or her doll. Finally, Mr. Cory had his young daughter committed to an asylum. She died there. More than a century later, when Zach and Heather moved into to the old mansion, the couple did not have to go looking for skeletons. The ghosts came looking for them! For whatever reason, they all seemed to think Zach was a good listener, and they wanted his help. While he was less than enthusiastic about this development, his wife loved the idea of helping those who need it. “Of course she loves it,” Zach complained. “She’s having a grand old time, but then again the ghosts aren’t here to see her!” It isn’t only Zach that attracts these restless beings, and it’s not limited to the dilapidated house either. Even before the old lumberman purchased his original 10,000 acres, First Americans told their own strange tales about the land. The area the locals have come to call Mystic is a sort of crossroads. A weigh station between life, death, and… Whatever. Nowadays if it was built anywhere on Mystic, it’s haunted. For example, there is a small roadhouse nearby, built back in the forties, with an excessive cover charge. There is also an old train depot run by a station man well past retirement. And of course there is Workman’s Cemetery, where a heartless young man was found murdered back in the 1950s... Well, he was heartless when they found him. Ghostly guests come to the inn from all over seeking help, or company. Some want answers, others have lost their way, and some need – well, something darker. The proprietors have managed to assist a few, while others just needed to take care of things themselves. Perhaps you’d like to take a look at the guest register or read the proprietor’s journal? From the author - Beyond this Point is a collection of ghost stories I wrote between 1980 and 1990. My family always enjoyed a good ghost story around the fireplace or campfire. These are a few of those stories. Some of the tales are romantic, some are tragic, and others are a bit darker. Each story in some way ties back to the Mystic Inn, where the proprietors are dedicated to helping their guests journey beyond this point… I hope you enjoy your visit to Mystic.
