Conspiracy Against the African Gods is a story that depicts the identity crisis that trails contemporary African Christians. African Traditional Religion was 'murdered' by colonialists when they referred to it as paganism. While trying to civilize Africans, the colonialist did not forget to ‘civilise’ the African God and their modes of worship. However, in reality, Africans especially the Igbo people east of the Niger, knows that they worship the living God.Joseph and his elder sister Therex were blessed with a rare gift of 'ndụabụọ' which literally means 'two lives'. With such gifts, one can easily connect one's dreams with reality. Set in South-east Nigeria of 1990s and 2000s, growing children get confused as they battle with Christian teachings in the churches and reality of African Traditional Religion and shrines in the nooks and crannies of their homes. The fanfare with which the former was celebrated made it appealing to children while the later which seemed to permeate their lives were denigrated. For some reasons, Joseph was allowed by the gods of Umudi Clan to continue his journey to Roman Catholic Priesthood if he would also act as the Ezemụọ (Traditional Chief Priest) of his community. The Church leaders ignorantly allowed him to be ordained. The drama only started after his ordination. The gods of Umudi refused to accept any other priest in Umudi vicarage. And the battle line was drawn.But Therex for no fault of hers was not granted such freedom of choice by Nwaanyịafọ the benevolent goddess of Umudi people. Like her brother, she wanted to become a Reverend Sister. But Nwaanyịafọ had another plan. Therex hated Nwaanyịafọ for this, but much was at stake. The survival of her people depended on her. In her pursuit of white man’s religions, she sacrificed with the colonialist the epistemological realities of his people that could have contributed much to the world.The consequences were enormous. Her life and the lives of those Africans who ignore signs left by the ancestors on the sands of time got worse for it. She became rich based on the powers bestowed on her by the benevolent ancestors, but life became meaningless.
