Overview
Still reeling from the aftereffects of the accident that killed his wife and young son years ago in the spring of 1946, David Atherton is heading toward Miami-- the first trip in his sporty, almost-new Cougar. He hopes the end of the journey will provide the release he's been looking for since the tragedy. After drinking a cup of coffee and eating a chicken sandwich along the route, Atherton returns to his car and begins driving south when he realizes he is not alone. He has acquired a passenger who is pointing what looks like a .45-caliber automatic pistol at the back of Atherton's head. For all Atherton knows, the passenger could be a desperate serial killer running from the FBI, and Atherton could be experiencing the last few hours of his life.Based on a true story, author George B. Stanford shares a partly true tale that, with its fast-moving narrative and unexpected twists, evokes memories of O. Henry's short stories. But Into the Night does more than surprise. At first, it shocks, and then it offers reassurances that even under extraordinary and terrible circumstances, a person can endure and sometimes, in the end, find a long-elusive peace.
