Overview
Blackened silhouettes of dead tree trunks stretched like broken teeth towards the meager rays of sunlight. Twilight stole in amongst the worm rotted wood and a preternatural gloom descended on swift wings. Here in this oubliette, this place of forgetting, things that once were slowly stirred and began to breathe again. **** “How much farther is this place?” Lilly asked as she followed the overall clad back of her cousin Feral. “Not too far now. Mind your step the ground is getting slippery from the frost,” he replied half turning to offer her a hand. Lilly took the proffered hand and felt the rough calluses scratch against her soft skin. Feral went to the local high school but when he was home he helped his father on the farm. His calluses were nothing to be ashamed of. He was a big strapping boy with ginger colored hair and a light dusting of freckles across his cheeks. He had become Lilly's self-appointed protector when she came to live with them earlier in the summer. Lilly couldn't remember what life had been like without Feral in it. She didn't have long to think about it as she slipped on one of the frost covered stones and reached blindly for Feral's strong hands. “Are you sure the others will be here?” Lilly asked as Feral stood her on the rocks beside him. He nodded but said nothing. His attention had been drawn away into the crouching specter of darkness. Lilly shivered involuntarily as her gaze drifted past his broad shoulders to the dead valley that lay spread out below their perch.
