The Lone Rider is a story set in the 14th Century, when people believed in dragons, when Knights roamed the land, there was bad blood and fights between branches of the nobility in many areas and there were lots of forests all over Europe in which these unholy terrors could take place.Apart from these fights, people were afraid of what might happen in the forests as there were often robbers and thieves, village girls were abducted and some people who had to go into the woods for genuine reasons were captured and never seen again.The story of the Lonely Rider in the Woods sort of became legendary in one area until people realized that their grandfathers had originally told them, the story and there was no reason the be scared anymore after all this time, but they were. And then somene saw a riderless horse in the woods.This horse came into a village one day and a brave young man got onto the horses back and galloped off into the woods.There are various stories of the happenings in the woods, like the brave young man finding a castle and another village on the other side of the woods that no-one had ever known about, robbers near this castle that abducted people, a legend of people dying in the caves and becoming alive again as dragons whose fire roasted unfortunate people caught in the woods for their supper and people trying to protect themselves against attack in their homes by planting magic plants called dragon plants that only grew near the dragons' caves.The story of the lone rider is explained when more villages are found near other parts of the woods and it transpired that it was a kind of patrol to catch robbers in that area. The truth behind a lot of the stories seemed tame and the dragon plants, divided and dispersed to people in the villages, defused a lot of tension. They felt protected in their homes at night when these plants grew outside their front doors.There are quite a few stories that are interlinked as people get to know each other, stories of an itenerant tinker, a man who had cheated on his girlfriend and then tried to kill her when he got into a tight corner, a brave and strong ducchess who was admired for her bravery when she insisted on going with men on horseback to rescue her husband who had been caught by robbers.It is an exciting view of medieval rural life and its dangers and is an enjoyable read. There is quite a bit of blood and gore as there would have been in those days.This is for you if you like that sort of thing and if you do, don't miss it at this price.Enjoy!
